The Minnetonka Skippers and Wayzata Trojans met on February 23, 2013 in the MSHSL Section 6AA semifinal game at the Bloomington Ice Gardens. The Minnetonka Skippers won both regular season meetings between the two teams and Wayzata fans were hoping the third meeting would be the charm.
The first period saw aggressive play by the Wayzata Trojans. Minnetonka started the game flat footed and were beaten to many pucks. As a result the Trojans’ Jalen Wahl scored (assists to Akash Batra and Chase Heising). The first period ended with the score 1-0 Trojans leading Skippers.
The Trojans got the scoring started in the second period jumping to a 2-0 lead. Minnetonka’s Tommy Brandabur left the game with what appeared to be a knee injury suffered after being checked right in front of the Skipper’s bench. There was no penalty called on the play and it seemed to light a fire under the Skippers as they started winning the races to the puck and scored their first goal.
The Skipper’s Connor Thie (number 7) fired a shot that went through the Trojan goalie’s legs. The puck got hung up in the goalie’s pads before gliding to the back of the neck. In the moment this took the ref’s whistle blew. The goal was waived off. The winds turned on the Minnetonka Skipper’s sails and the team would not recover. The second period ended with the Trojans up 2-1 on the Skippers.
The third period was dominated by the Wayzata Trojans, smothering the Skipper offense and confusing the Skipper defense. The Trojans would score three goals in the third period. Jalen Wahl led the Trojan scoring with a hat trick, leading the Trojans to victory.
Wayzata will play Benilde-St. Margaret's on Thursday to determine the Section 6AA champion. Stay tuned to The Minnesota Sports Report for continued boys hockey coverage. You can also now follow us on Twitter and Facebook. This article originally appeared on The Minnesota Sports Report.
