Lately, Memphis has been hit with bitterly cold weather and snow, which is the perfect recipe for staying indoors. However, staying inside to keep warm over long periods of time could lead to unhealthy habits. Sedentary lifestyles like this can place you at risk for unhealthy habits. So if you're snow-bound until the weather starts to turn around, here are some tips to keep you healthy:
Get exercise. Most health guidelines recommend that you get at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. Yes, this can be difficult -- especially if your living space is small. However, you don't need a lot of space to get the exercise you need per day, even if you aren't able to get out of your living quarters to go to the gym. You can walk around briskly inside of your house, or do sit-ups, push-ups or stretching exercises. Chores can also count. Vacuuming, sweeping, shoveling snow from the driveway, or cleaning out your closets also help. As long as you’re moving, it counts as exercise.
Eat healthy. When the forecast for snow hits, many Memphians flood the grocery stores in anticipation of being indoors. Although it can be easier to stock up on snack foods, the calories and fat in these foods can add up. Why not stock up on healthier foods, such as fruits or veggies? Staple ingredients, such as low-fat milk, oatmeal, eggs, and whole-wheat bread can also be helpful in making healthy foods in a pinch.
Get motivated. Sick of being stuck at home? There are plenty of things to do when it is freezing cold outside in the Memphis area. If you’re an avid shopper, go to the mall. Some of the larger malls, such as Oak Court Mall or Wolfchase Galleria, have plenty of room to walk around so that you can sneak some exercise in, too. Do you like to play sports, but not in the freezing cold? Try bowling or playing racquetball. Do you enjoy reading but are tired of being indoors? Go to one of the many libraries in the Memphis area and pick up a book.
