Memorial Day is this Monday, May 31st and there are plenty of green things you can do without spending a lot of green!
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day is typically celebrated on the last Monday in May, in honor of our nation's fallen veterans. It's also typically viewed as the first day of the Summer season, as most pools begin to open and school children finish up another academic calendar year. In the Midwest, many of us know that Summer is upon us, with consistent warm weather and beautiful growing foliage.
Want to enjoy this Memorial Day weekend with friends, family and loved ones? Here are some great green ideas for things to do.
Take in a parade or local festival. Most towns, cities and municipalities hold parades and Memorial Day celebrations. You won't need to travel far to find one. Enjoy the sunshine. Listen to a local high school band. Connect with people you haven't seen in a while.
Take a bike ride. Central Ohio is home to several bike trails, including the new Lancaster Bike Trail and several bike trails in Newark. Blackhand Gorge is further north, but beautiful! Follow this link for more Ohio bike trails.
Go to a flea market. Reinersville Trader Days Flea Market in Morgan county is one of the largest around. The Hocking Hills Flea Market is also a great find in the Rockville/Logan region. Flea markets support local community and you can often find things you wouldn't be able to find in a retail store.
Have a cookout. Enjoy the beautiful weather and connect with friends and family over a home cooked meal.
Take a camping trip. Central Ohio has several primitive and non-primitive camping sites to enjoy. Sit by the campfire, take a hike, go fishing. Reconnect in nature on a Memorial Day camping trip. Find a camping destination here.
No matter what you choose to do this Memorial Day weekend, its sure to be a lovely one! Enjoy it!
