In an exclusive Partners in Health and Biz radio show interview, Registered Nurse and author Bridget Bethany, spoke about the importance of celebrating nurses during National Nurses Week, May 6 -12, with the release of her new book "Spiritual Vitamins - The Heart & Soul of Today’s Nurse: Humor and Inspiration for a Better Day."
"So it's a national holiday for nurses that week," Bethany explained. "Nurses get to bask in the glory of their organization or institution recognizing them for all their work."
For example, hospitals, health and medical facilities shower nurses with gifts, food and other favors.
"As a nurse advocate for the well being of the nurses, I decided, 'Let me use this week to get my book out there,' " she said.
Bethany's book was featured his week at the Potomac Adventist Book and Health Food Store in Silver Spring, MD., where she met shoppers and signed her new book.
In addition, some of the ways we can show appreciation to the nurses we admire and honor them during this week could be as simple as taking a nurse to lunch, buying several nurses thank you cards, or writing an uplifting, inspirational poem and reading it in church or at a community event.
On a larger scale, you could consider group activities such as starting a non-profit charity in honor of a nurse you respect, or one who has passed on, hosting a cook-out or party at your home or a community center for 5- 10 nurses that you admire.
If you are an elementary school teacher you could have the children in your classroom honor nurses by drawing pictures of nurses helping their patients and deliver the pictures to a specific hospital ward.
The nursing profession has been supported by the American Nurse's Association (ANA) since 1896 and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs through the state and district nurses associations, other specialty nursing organizations, educational facilities, and independent health care companies and institutions.
"Spiritual Vitamins" may be purchased through Amazon.com, and could be given as a gift of honor.
