According to today is the day for dog lovers everywhere to spend a little extra time with their furry friends. August 26 is the day set aside for dog lovers shower their dogs with love, and to reach out to help other dogs who are in need.

National Dog Day is reportedly a day to not only celebrate with family dogs, but to also bring attention to all the other dogs. These include dogs who are currently living in shelters as well as dogs who put their lives on the line everyday to protect and serve humans alongside law enforcement and in the military.

The United States alone has an estimated 3,500 animal shelters that reportedly take in between six to eight million dogs and cats every year. In a study done between 2012 and 2013, three to four million of those pets were adopted, while 2.7 million were reportedly euthanized.

There are many ways you can “celebrate” National Dog Day. Start by taking your own dog to a park for his/her evening walk, and giving him/her a special treat. Then, think about reaching out to dogs in need, or to the dogs that help protect the people that protect you. Make a small monetary donation to a dog rescue group like the Beagle Freedom Project, which rescues beagles from research laboratories, or take a bag of food or treats to your local animal shelter. Don't have the funds to donate? Talk to your local shelter about scheduling some time to volunteer.

It doesn't matter how you go about helping dogs in need. Even if you only have love and cuddles to give it could be one of the most meaningful things anyone has ever done for a dog in need.
