While speaking at the CPAC conference in Washington D.C. Thursday, National Rifle Association executive vice-president Wayne LaPierre warned that conservatives are being targeted by a dishonest media and politicians willing to use the IRS as a weapon to silence critics.

"Freedom has never needed our defense more than now,” he said. “Almost everywhere you look, something has gone wrong. You feel it in your heart. You know it in your gut: Something in our country has gone wrong.”

Core freedoms, like free speech and privacy, are under attack, he said, by “political and media elites” who are “lying to us.”

He also told attendees the so-called "mainstream media" has become a threat to the nation.

“Rather than expose government dishonesty and scandal like they used to, the media elite white-wash it all. Move on they tell us, there is nothing to see here, don’t worry about it, move on. One of America’s greatest threats is a national news media that fails to provide a level playing field for the truth,” he said.

Instead of seeking the truth, LaPierre said the media has decided to advance their own agenda with political spin and use of language.

"Truth be damned," he said of the current state of journalism.

“I’ll tell you they’ve never been honest about the NRA. They hate us, just for saying out loud and sticking up for what we believe, as if we have no right,” he said.

“The media’s intentional corruption of the truth is an abomination and NRA members will never, and I mean never, submit or surrender to the national media,” he added.

As we have reported several times, liberals -- including journalists, professors and a member of the Texas Democratic Party Executive Committee -- have gone so far as to call for the murder of those who support the NRA and the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Even some in Hollywood, like actress Marg Helgenberger, have jumped on the "violence against the NRA" bandwagon.

The media has also done its part, demonizing gun owners and those who support gun rights.

He also went after politicians he said "lie bills into law" and "pass bills they haven’t read and then defend them on television."

Those who disagree, he said, can expect to become targeted by the IRS.

“The IRS is now a weapon,” he said, “a weapon to punish anyone who has disagreed with them."

"That means all of you," he added, referring to conservatives at the conference.

The IRS has already admitted targeting Tea Party groups and other conservative organizations seeking a tax-exempt status.

Nevertheless, liberal Democrats claim there is no scandal, even as some -- like Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., have openly called for the IRS to target the Tea Party. Vulnerable Senate Democrats have also asked the IRS to take actions against conservative groups.

“We are on our own. That’s a certainty,” LaPierre told the conference. “When you’re on your own, the surest way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

He concluded by saying the NRA will continue to fight for their cause.
