Toronto-based Wattpad, an online community of readers and writers, launched the Attys on Thursday.
Named after Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Attys are a digital competition open to amateur and established poets around the world. Participants have until October 31, 2012, to submit one entry ("Enthusiasts") or a collection of 10 poems, each in a different poetic form ("Competitors"). Entries may be changed at any time during the contest.
Top prizes in the Competitors category include $1,000 for the winner, feedback sessions from Atwood via Fanado, and copies of the Griffin Poetry Awards Anthology. The best poems will also be included in a collection featured on Wattpad.
All Enthusiasts will be entered into a random draw for a chance to win one of several prizes, including a Nexus 7 Android tablet.
"Poetry is at the core of each language, and language itself is at the core of our humanity," says Margaret Atwood on Wattpad. "May you enjoy composing your own poems, and enjoy reading the poems of others! These are very ancient pleasures; by sharing in them, you are sharing in our own deep history."
Atwood, who will be part of the judging panel and will select the top three winners herself, joined Wattpad in June of this year. She has shared three of her poems so far.
