Watsonville officials find man shot behind the wheel of a car

Watsonville police are investigating a mysterious shooting that occurred over the weekend.

Police say that at about 12:40 p.m. Saturday, the Watsonville Fire Department was in the area of Freedom and Airport boulevards when they were flagged down by a citizen.

Firefighters stopped and learned that there was a man slumped behind the wheel of a car that had stopped in one of the northbound lanes of Freedom Boulevard.

The victim, a Hispanic man in his early 20s, was in the driver’s seat of a white, four-door Cadillac. Fire officials were about to assist the victim when they noticed blood inside the car and a handgun sitting on the man’s lap. It was then that police were notified of the incident and called to the scene to retrieve the weapon.

The victim sustained one bullet wound to the head, but was still breathing when fire officials found him. He was airlifted to a trauma center in Santa Clara County.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members. Police have not revealed whether or not the incident is being investigated as an attempted suicide.
