Richard Westbrook passed then-leader and polesitter Alex Brundle with minutes remaining in the 2014 Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen on Sunday, June 29, to take the overall victory, according to Watkins Glen International. The TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race entertained a record number of fans in attendance throughout the day.
Westbrook and teammate Michael Valiante, who tested at WGI earlier in the season, led the way in the Prototype class, followed by the team of Alex Brundle, Gustavo Yacamán and Ho-Pin Tung. Action Express racing captured its third-consecutive podium finish, failing to repeat the 2012 and 2013 victories with Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Burt Frisselle piloting the No. 5 Corvette DP.
In the Prototype Challenge (PC) class, Colin Braun and Jon Bennett, who tested in the spring, won their fourth race of the season. Following Braun and Bennett on the podium were Martin Plowman, Doug Bielefeld and David Cheng, and Gunnar Jeannette and Frankie Montecalvo, respectively.
Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia took home the checkered flag in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class. Taking home the Hawke+Axel produced glass trophy on Sunday, Marc Goossens and Jonathan Bomarito drove two different cars to second and third-place finishes. For second, Goossens and Bomarito teamed with Dominik Farnbacher; for third, the duo teamed with Kuno Wittmer.
Dane Cameron and Markus Palttala crossed the finish line first in the GT Daytona (GTD) class of Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler piloted the No. 555 Ferrari 458 Italia to a second-place finish, and the No. 44 Magnus Racing was third. John Potter and Andy Lally, who tested at The Glen, along with Sebastian Asch piloted the Porsche 911 GT America.
Teams that tested on the historic road course earlier in the season placed well in the race, perhaps proving that the time and effort of coming to upstate New York before race day holds an advantage for teams that choose to do that.
The next race event on the WGI calendar is the SCCA Majors Super Tour taking to the circuit July 4-6.
