There was once a man...a man who was no stranger to country music when he took the stage at Watershed 2013. Neal McCoy has been on the country music scene since the late 80's. Really hitting his stride in the 90's when he had several hits on the radio. As such, those of use who've been listening to country music for years, didn't know he was still touring.
But what an amazing surprise!!! Neal took the stage with a more...creative entrance than most. Introducing himself to a relatively young audience, he literally did just that--introduced himself. He discussed Neal McCoy's great achievements like it was someone else, then laughed and ran out on to the stage to what would become one of the most entertaining shows of the weekend.
He quickly jumped from song to song, and then admitted that he and his band really didn't have any playlist for the evening and they had to be capable of keeping up with him on the stage. Neal sang some classics, but really invigorated the crowd with his repeated jokes towards the young and old alike in the audience. When he sang classic songs, he would say things like, "Ok, everyone look at the old people next to them if they need help figuring out the words." He did the same when he randomly broke into Justin Timberlake and other Top 40 modern hip hop songs, this time telling the old people he was taking a break, and would return to the "old people" later.
Possibly the two most memorable moments were when he sang a rap version of the "the Beverly Hillbillies'" theme song, and when he discussed multiple times the "nastiness"/dirtiness of modern songs vs older then explained his song "The Wink" was actually a song that sounded sweet but had a "nasty" slant, making the whole audience laugh. While the crowd was not huge when Neal started singing, by the end of his set, he had pulled in people of all ages, entertaining us all with his antics.
I think I'm not alone in saying, "Watershed, please bring back Neal. That was so fun!"
