Watermelon is the perfect summer fruit. So, you may be asking yourself, why am I daring to offer a recipe ... with chocolate? Because, dear readers, it is an amazing flavor combination, and so very easy to make in your own kitchen. The sweet watermelon is balanced by the bittersweet chocolate, making a fantastic, easy, and sophisticated dessert.
All of the ingredients can be found easily in any Kroger or Publix right here in Nashville, but please buy your fresh fruit at the Nashville Farmers Market. Support your local farmer, and make your taste buds dance!
Watermelon and chocolate
- 4 pounds ripe watermelon, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 2 tablespoons sugar, optional
- 2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, shaved
Remove the rind from the watermelon, cutting away any part of the flesh that isn't sweet and ripe. Dice the melon and carefully pick out all seeds. If the watermelon is not intensely sweet, sprinkle with the optional sugar. Toss gently. Chill until needed. Just before serving, spoon the watermelon and juices into chilled goblets and sprinkle chocolate shavings over the top. Makes 6 servings.
