Waterfront Restaurants IN WilmINgton, Delaware

Call us crazy, but my wife and I would rather eat mush in a waterfront setting than caviar at a fine restaurant. That’s why we love the waterfront restaurants in Wilmington. As I reported a few weeks ago, Wilmington has several unique and impressive culinary establishments, but with a couple of exceptions (Walter’s Steak House and the Green Room at the Hotel du Pont) we always seem to find ourselves drifting back to the six waterfront restaurants on Wilmington’s Christina Riverwalk. Perhaps that’s because they are all so different.

On the high end, there’s Harry’s Seafood Grille next to the Riverfront Market. Harry’s is the quintessential waterfront dinning emporium – complete with high ceilings, huge windows, a great wine list and a raw bar to die for. But they also have great steaks and chops. We generally opt for eating outside – you guessed it -- to get even closer to the water!

C.W. Harborside is just a few steps down the Riverwalk, where you can eat good food, enjoy large cocktails and watch your favorite football or basketball game all at the same time. And, Harborside has a huge patio with a special outdoor menu. There’s even live music during the summer months.

Joe’s Crab Shack is just around the bend. Like all of the restaurants in the chain, Joe’s is a great place for families -- especially if you want a whole room full of people singing happy birthday to you.

Next to “the Shack” is the Iron Hill Brewery. If you like home-grown, small batch beers this is the place for you. Sports enthusiasts will probably eat inside with the televisions. But Cathy and I prefer the huge deck overlooking – what else – the water!

The newest waterfront restaurant on the Riverwalk is the Big Fish Grill. They specialize in succulent seafood entrees, but you won’t miss your favorite game because there are lots of televisions, as well.

Last but certainly not least, Timothy’s on the Riverfront, is in the Shipyard Shops complex of outlet stores next to Dan Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington’s Blue Rocks baseball team. The restaurant prides itself on a relaxing atmosphere and consistently good food. Timonthy’s is also the closest restaurant to Wilmington’s new Dupont Environmental Education Center at the Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. Catch the latest rage – wine and wildlife!

Speaking of “on the water” we can’t wait for spring when the Riverboat Queen will begin a new season of cruising on the Christina. That means the return of their fabulous “all you can eat” seagoing crab feasts. You can’t get any closer to the water than that!

All six of Wilmington’s waterfront venues are within walking distance of Amtrak Station via the Christina Riverwalk. Or take one of our new water taxis. For the motoring public, there’s free parking everywhere. And for downtown hotel guests, I heartily recommend a leisurely ride on the Wilmington Trolley from Rodney Square through the Lower Market Street National Historic District, past the Delaware Historical Society and Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts to one of several stops near the Christina Riverwalk.

See you on the waterfront in Wilmington!
