Waterfall on Avery Creek

Folks familiar with the Davidson River Campground in Pisgah National Forest will know Avery Creek dumps into the Davidson River at the campground; however, this waterfall is well upstream from there.

The gate into Pisgah National Forest at the intersection of US 64 and US 276 in Pisgah Forest, NC. Take US 276 into the Forest. You will quickly pass the entrance to Davidson River Campground on your left then begin looking on your right for a Riding Stables sign. Follow that road 2.0 miles to the stables after which you will cross a bridge and the character of the road will change as it can be a little narrow with very steep, almost vertical drop-offs on the right. After 0.3 miles past the stables, you will find a small turn-out with room for about 2 cars. The trail marker for the Avery Creek Trail is in the front of the turn-out.

Starting out high above the creek, the blue-blazed trail will quickly drop you down to Avery Creek and an open creek bottom which looks like it used to have beaver activity. Cross a footbridge to a T junction. Turn left, staying with the blue blazes.

A half mile from the trail head, you will see the waterfall down on your left. Continuing on, there is an obvious trail that will take you to the top of the waterfall. Unfortunately, the configuration of the falls within the stream bed makes it very difficult to get down to the base of the falls. Guides don’t even mention it, they just talk about “coming alongside the falls.”

So, your best bet is back downstream at about the location you first saw the waterfall. You can get a reasonable photo by shooting the face of the waterfall through the trees.
