Water, a mom's new best friend

Do you get enough water? Most likely, the answer is no. The average woman (or American in general!) does not drink enough water on a daily basis. I’m talking about plain, pure water. .. not tea, coffee, juice, soda or any other liquid.

Water is so important for our bodies as our bodies are composed of a large percentage of water. According to the Mayo Clinic, “water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.”

Drinking enough water can also help you lose weight. Often thirst can manifest as hunger. People commonly eat when in actuality their bodies are just craving water. Drinking more water can be the first simple step toward weight loss, which many moms desire.

Not sure how much you should be drinking? This definitely depends on the person and his or her individual body. However, it is a good rule of thumb to drink half your body weight in ounces every day. For example, a 130 lb woman would aim to drink 65 ounces of water each day, which is equivalent to four 16-ounce water bottles. A 200 lb man would aim to drink 100 ounces of water in a day, or a little more than six 16-ounce water bottles.

Of course there are factors that affect your water needs. If you strenuously exercise, have an illness/health condition or are pregnant or nursing your needs may be different, and you should consult with your doctor.

Here are five simple tips for adding more water into your day:

1. Drink a big glass of water first thing in the morning when you wake up. I start my day with a mug of warm lemon water. It’s a relaxing, soothing, cleansing way to ease into the morning.

2. Drink at least one full glass of water between consuming other beverages. For example, if you have a cup of coffee, make sure to drink a full glass of water before refilling your coffee cup.

3. Bring a water bottle with you wherever you go so you always have something to quench your thirst. Keep it in your car, your purse or on your desk.

4. Spruce up your water. Add a wedge of lemon or lime. Add a sliver of your favorite fruit. Add a sprig of mint. Be creative! (This one works especially good with children!)

5. Don’t wait until your are thirsty! Once your body starts signaling thirst, you can be assured you waited too long between drinks.

This is one of the simplest, yet most effective health changes you can make! Plus water is free and widely available.

Tip: Try to drink the majority of water in the first half of the day. Limit the amount you drink after dinner or in the evening so that you don’t disrupt your sleep by having to take bathroom breaks.
