The USA is on pins and needles, expecting a likely tough draw outcome. "I think we hope for a group where you feel like it gives a good opportunity to move forward," said Bob Bradley, who replaced Arena as U.S. coach after the Americans' first-round elimination in 2006. "There's always going to be, at the end, a 'Group of death,' and you say to yourselves, 'Well, hopefully we're not part of that.' It's out of your control."
South Africa of course is turning the event into a giant party for the globe. South Africa will know with which teams it will compete in the group stages of the 2010 World Cup when the draw, attended by dignitaries and glitterati from around the globe, takes place in Cape Town. More importantly, today will signal the start of a period of intense scrutiny of this country, not as the place that gave birth to such iconic figures as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu nor the spectacular nature of the environment.
