A watch can be a utilitarian timepiece, signature accessory, or family heirloom. While some prefer to read the time on cell phone screens, watches (both digital and analog) continue to be excellent gifts. This season, some big name brands are keeping time with style.
D & G are in a New York frame of mind with their dainty 'cheesecake' watch (with bracelet links shaped like wedges of the city's signature creamy dessert) and architecturally inspired watchfaces. A cleanly gridded analog design brings to mind the beauty of Columbus Circle. Color seeps into the collection via the Medicine Man , a face that mimics the colorful rectangles of old TV test patterns. You can find the watches at Nieman Marcus and Macy's.
Kenneth Cole debuts a new touch screen watch that brings the freedom and ease of gadgets like the ipod to your wrist. The rose gold and white (for women) will go perfectly with the floaty summer dresses coming with warm weather. The Transparency line focuses on art deco elements that add a touch of elegant modernity to minimalist outfits. The juxtaposition of clear glass and metal in the watchfaces are a bold look. Price points are from $95-$165, and they're already available at Nordstrom or Kenneth Cole locations.
Lifestyle brand Freestyle has been a favorite of the surfboard set since 1981. Fun, colorful digital watches (their famous Shark series) can be layered, like swatches in the 80's. The brand also offers tough looking chronomatographs like the Hammerhead- great for runners, swimmer, and anyone that just wants to look like they do triathlons.
My favorite Freestyle watch was the Karlton, with the aqua face. It has a sunny look to it that is perfect for young city guys stripping down to v-neck tees and jorts for rides out to Coney Island. It has a tropical feel, the design is airy and light, and the black textured polyurethane strap is as wide as a cuff. Snatch this one up now, you can afford it.
There were so many watches at the Geneva Watch Group showroom that they can't all fit in one story... Part 2, featuring BCBG and Breil Milano (who showed some amazing morphing jewelry) will be up shortly.
