Watch: t.A.T.u. opens Winter Olympics in Sochi with 'Not Gonna Get Us' live

Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. reunited on Friday for the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony. Lena Katina and Julia Volkova sang the Russian version of their defiant 2003 hit "Not Gonna Get Us."

The inclusion of t.A.T.u. in the Olympics struck some as an odd since the duo rose to worldwide prominence in 2002 with "All The Things She Said," a controversial single and music video in which they explored lesbian themes. Russia's president Vladimir Putin enacted a strict anti-gay law back in June of last year. Though not actually lesbians, the members of t.A.T.u. have continually voiced their support for the LGBTQ community. They are also one of the biggest acts from Russia to breakout on a global scale and Putin probably wanted to put his country's most recognized singers out there for the ceremony.

For their Olympics performance, t.A.T.u. sang "Нас Не Догонят" (the Russian version of "Not Gonna Get Us"). Katina and Volkova took the stage in Russian comrade outfits with school girl flair. They held hands as dancers in rainbow-colored outfits grooved to the synth-pop hit. The ladies usually end their performance on a kiss but stopped short of actually locking lips in Sochi. t.A.T.u went as far as they could legally with their colorful show.

t.A.T.u.'s performance of "Нас Не Догонят" was done during the Olympics' opening ceremony pre-show, which means it won't be shown in the U.S. They previously reunited in 2012 for the tenth anniversary of their debut album "200km/h in the Wrong Lane." Katina and Volkova sang "All The Things She Said" on Romania's "The Voice" in support of their re-release.
