When life is running smoothly and everything is going precisely the way we think it should, we have a tendency to take on the mindset that we’ve overcome obstacles and are joyfully moving along all by ourselves. We’re proud of our accomplishments and we have no trouble letting everyone know what we have done. Life is at it should be and so we sit back, relax, and relish in the momentary peace that fills our heart.
Happy times? Yes. Dangerous times? Extremely! Proverbs 16:18-19 warns us that “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.”
How do we turn around our arrogant attitudes and avoid the path to destruction? By giving glory and praise to the Lord! When we praise Him, we acknowledge that He is the one who is in charge of our lives and it is He who lights our paths and directs our footsteps. “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Proverbs 16:20).
With eyes on Him and Him alone, we’re ready to walk out the door in His strength and in His peace. “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock (Matthew 7:24-27).
