Unfortunately, there are many sellers on eBay who deal in fake sunglasses – and many of them have good feedback. Because of that, it can be hard to tell who is legitimate and who is not. Here are a few tips to help you tell the difference –
Start by looking at the price. Anything that is too cheap is a dead giveaway. Compare the listing with completed listings on eBay to get an idea of the average price. Be very careful of any listings that are significantly below the average.
Pay attention to the title of the listing. If it says the sunglasses are “style” or something similar, that likely means they’re a knock off.
Any legitimate seller will include a warranty card and box with their sunglasses. All brand new sunglasses come with these, so any listings that don’t include them are either selling fake or used sunglasses. Some sellers will try to fool buyers by including a fake box or a box from a different pair of sunglasses. Make sure the barcodes match.
Check to see if the seller has guaranteed that the sunglasses are authentic. Many fake sellers will conveniently forget to include this.
Most sunglass manufacturers will label everything that is included. Check the cleaning box and warranty card to make sure they have the brand name.
If the listing has only official pictures included, email the seller and ask for additional images. Check the pictures carefully to make sure everything looks normal – no weird stickers or tags.
Visit the official site of the sunglasses company. Compare the model listed on eBay and make sure all the colors are correct – many fake sunglasses will be the wrong color for the model number. Also make sure the model is even on the website – some vendors will list fake ones.
If you have a question about something in the listing or something just looks off to you, contact the seller. Legitimate sellers will have no problem providing proof that the sunglasses are genuine. If the seller ignores your request, walk away.
Finally, you can always get your new sunglasses checked by the manufacturer. The majority of companies will do this for free if you mail them the sunglasses or visit an official dealer.
