On March 2, 2014, Hollywood’s most celebratory night kicks off with the Oscars Red Carpet arrivals. This is the time where celebrities wear designer suits, jewels and accessories and become the subject of fashion praise and faux pas for weeks to come. While watching the Academy Awards and finding out who wins for best actor and actress or the year’s best film is the main draw of the event, the fashion aspect of the Red Carpet arrivals cannot be overlooked. This year ABC will stream Oscar coverage through the ABC app and on ABC.go.com, making it easy to watch the Red Carpet arrivals from a home-based television, mobile device, computer or cell phone.
The 86th annual Academy Awards is expected to dominate the night’s ratings.
ABC has released an official “Watch ABC” app; marking the first time they’ve endorsed users to watch the show live, streaming online through the app. The move is not without controversy; however, as ABC is a digitally broadcast, on air channel that is easily viewed free of charge over network television. The Watch ABC app is viewable only for particular cable subscribers and within select areas (Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Raleigh-Durham). Cable companies hosting live streaming include Verizon FiOS, AT&T U-verse, Cox Communications Midcontinent Communications, Comcast, Cablevision, Google Fiber and Charter Communications. Those with subscriptions to these cable, satellite and network providers will have access to the full program after it airs. Access to the stream requires users to log in with their cable subscription user name and password.
So, what options are there for people who don’t have cable subscriptions yet still want to watch the Oscars 2014 live stream from their computers, cell phones, tablets or other mobile device? Actually, there are several.
First, there is the Internet. The official ABC Academy Awards “Oscars” website will have videos throughout the night.
Next, there are sites that will broadcast or live stream the Oscars and Red Carpet and show the streaming video online.
Here are several links to sites that provide their own Red Carpet coverage and interviews via live stream.
Additional ways to watch the show include UStream and LiveStream. Both sites regularly host Oscar coverage. Justin TV is also known to put up live streams of events such as the Oscars award show as well as the Red Carpet. The Ustream channel Pop Sugar hosts a behind-the-scenes, Oscars red carpet event with commentary annually.
Finally, there are websites that live stream television broadcasts from their home. For example, someone will have a live stream of ABC television shows broadcast online. Some sites that are known to do this without requiring people to download additional programs (that include spyware) include iLive Streema and Livestation. If you ever access a website that offers to sell you a stream or download “software” in order to watch the program , be wary. Remember, you can always exit an advertisement by clicking the "x" and not need to click on the ad itself. Of course, a reputable site like ABC may require you to download an APP or ensure your browser is compatible, but sites that offer free viewing of programs then want you to install “video-browsing software” are often installing spyware on your computer.
Are you excited for the Oscars Red Carpet live stream tonight? The action begins at 7 pm, ET.
