The pageant was held on Sept. 15, 2013, and aired live from Atlantic City, New Jersey on ABC. The pageant had created significant buzz before hand due to the contest having a contestant with a physical disfigurement and another who sported two tattoos. You may see a full list of the 53 Miss America contestants in the links below. It also marked the first time that a woman with Indian ethnicity won the crown: Miss New York Nina Davuluri.
Miss Davuluri delighted the audience and judges to a dynamic dance routine that featured Bollywood and Fusion. There was no question that Miss New York stood out, not only for her beauty but for brains and talent as well. It was quite disturbing that after she won the crowd, chatter arose on social media networks claiming that she was not “American” enough to win the title. It seems some feel that Miss America should be a blonde-haired, blue-eyed size 0 living Barbie doll, when clearly that is not what Americans or the judges feel is the ideal standard.
There are many points of discussion to be addressed when it comes to beauty pageants and the role these types of idealizations have on young girls’ minds, but if anything is certain, it is that seeing contestants with tattoos, missing portion of an arm, and women of different ethnicities is a step in the right direction.
Maybe one day, they’ll have women who are a size 16 or over make it to the finals.
