Take a look and listen to Crystal Bowersox' video for her song "Dead Weight," the first single from her upcoming sophomore album, All That For This. It's a good bet that the Season 9 runner-up just might have a hit on her hands, especially given the revived interest in the pop folk music scene.
Bowersox exclusively premiered the video on The Boot on Monday, March 11.
"This song means more to me than even I can completely comprehend," she told On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Feb. 5 when she debuted the new song on the "Idol" host's radio show. "I feel like it's one of those tunes where the meaning will get deeper and deeper over time as you start to really live and actualize the words into your existence. It's about knowing in your heart, that not knowing the outcome is perfectly acceptable. Breathe. I'm still figuring it out, myself."
The new album, self-described as the "next chapter" in the singer's life, will feature 12 new songs from the 27-year-old Ohioan, 11 of which she either wrote or co-wrote, Brian Mansfield reported at "Idol Chatter" in February. The exception is a cover of The Sundays hit, "Here's Where The Story Ends." All That For This also includes a duet with Wallflowers' frontman Jakob Dylan.
"I grew up a fan of the Wallflowers," she said of the collaboration. "I can remember wearing my headphones and walking down the property line on my mom's farm listening to Bringing Down the Horse. What his music did for me was give me a place to escape to when times were tough."
She insists the album also has its lighter side to match the darker themes. Even "Dead Weight," though somber, is inspirationally uplifting.
As for the title of the album, the singer told The Boot, "That title is about every serendipitous moment in my life, leading me to this one. I'm really happy right now, and the music reflects that."
You can hear "Dead Weight" and "Movin' On," the first two tracks from the new album on Bowersox' official website, CrystalBowersox.com.
A quick listen only leaves one wondering how she ever placed second on "American Idol"...
With "American Idol" back on the air for its twelfth season, it's an opportune time for "Idol" alums to debut new music. In fact, Fantasia Barrino has a new album due out in April as well. Last year, March and May were big months for "Idol" releases.
Bowersox herself is pretty busy these days. Besides the album release, she's slated to star in the Broadway play "Always... Patsy Cline" in the title role. The play is scheduled to premiere this summer.
Crystal Bowersox' All That For This is scheduled for release on March 26.
