The 2012 Michigan Winter Dog Classic, Michigan's largest all-breed AKC dog show, will showcase 7,000 dogs from over 170 AKC breeds, as well as vendors, rescue groups, and numerous family-friendly events and exhibits. The Oakland County Kennel Club shows, held Saturday and Sunday, January 21 and 22, features some AKC firsts as well. The show is held at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.
Live Streaming Video
For the first time ever, video of class and breed judging will be streamed live online. (In recent years, Westminster Kennel Club judging has been streamed, however Westminster is a Champions-only show.) Michigan Live Events will broadcast 14 rings in real-time on both Saturday and Sunday. Boxers show at 9:00 a.m. both days.
New AKC Event
To celebrate the owner-handler, who makes up more than 80 percent of the entries in all-breed shows, the American Kennel Club has developed a non-titling Owner/Handler Series. Each owner-handled dog in Best of Breed competition at designated shows will compete for Best Owner/Handler, after Breed judging is completed. The winner will go on to Owner/Handler Group and Best in Show competition. Owners who have handled other dogs for pay are not eligible. Saturday's OCKC show is the first ever Best Owner/Handler competition.
Other Features
In addition to conformation and obedience competition, the show will again feature a Best 4-6 Month Puppy competition on Sunday, educational demonstrations, and Meet the Breed seminars. Numerous vendors will be present with more items than you ever thought you'd need or want for your dog. The Detroit Zoo's mascots will be visiting the show on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Ticket stubs from the dog show can be redeemed for $1 off Detroit Zoo admission. The Michigan Winter Dog Classic also includes family-friendly events such as duck herding, training, and police dog demonstrations, weight pulling exhibitions, and performances by the Rock-N-Roll K-9s.
