The evil witch from the Disney film "Sleeping Beauty" now has a backstory of her own. On Friday, January 17 Comingsoon.net posted the first official trailer for the upcoming live action film "Maleficent," which tells the story of the sorceress during the events of the original film from her perspective. The film will be arriving in theaters on May 30, 2014. The official synopsis is listed below:
The untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty." A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman with stunning black wings, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army of humans threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land's fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal - an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the king of the humans and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom - and to Maleficent's true happiness as well.
The one and half minute trailer includes footage from the original animated adventure until Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) arrives to meet Princess Aurora. She leaves her mark and then disappears in her green smoke. There are many sweeping shots for the castle and the forest of thorn bushes she creates. Aurora (Elle Fanning) wanders into the woods and encounters Maleficent one day although the sorceress doesn't want to reveal herself. The two bond and Maleficent wants Aurora about the evils of the world as shots of forest creatures and fairy magic reveal magnificent special effects.
The story seems to unfold much like the original film, with Aurora finding and touching the spindle on the spinning wheel. However, the movie dives into how Maleficent came to be the dark way she was and shows she was once a happier woman. She destroys all the human forces that choose to fight her and wants to protect Aurora.
The Disney film also stars Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple and Sam Riley. This film marks the first time a villain as been the center of a Disney film although a movie about Cruella de Vil is currently in the works.
