Imagine pedaling down a smooth, flat, paved trail surrounded by a canopy of tall sycamore, pine, oak and other varieties of trees. Then suddenly you exit into a field of natural prairie grass for a few yards and then back into the covering of trees. All this is happening while next to the quick flowing mighty Missouri River.
If you have experienced this bike riding experience, you may have traveled down the Riverfront Trail in Washington, Missouri. This hidden treasure provides a welcome escape for many residents of this growing Missouri River town.
One of the trail’s ends start at the Washington City Park, where many go for a picnic lunch, or to launch their boats into the river, or just to sit and relax as the waters of the state’s namesake flow by. The park is located on the south bank of the river and the northern border of Franklin County.
The other end of the trail is three miles away. There is a small parking lot at that end. So a round trip on a bike, trike, rollerblades, or by foot will log the traveler six miles of exercise. On any nice-weather day, a visitor will fine many outdoor enthusiasts either by themselves or walking their canine companions. Most will greet each other with a smile on their faces and a hop in their steps.
After experiencing the trail, one might take a short trip just across the Amtrak/freight tracks to indulge in one of the local eating establishments. Cowen’s Restaurant is a family eating place that is known locally for its homemade pies (http://cowansrestaurant.com). The American Bounty Wine Bar and Restaurant is located in the historic Tibbe district (http://bountyrestaurantandwinebar.com). It is housed in an old wine and tobacco shop which dates back to 1858. And Marguart’s Landing (http://www.marquartslandingonline.com) is a eating icon where live bands frequently entertain guests.
Some travelers may want to turn this trip into a weekend stay by booking a room at the many Bed and Breakfasts on either side of the river.
Whatever you decide, just be sure to bring your bike, rollerblades, or walking shoes to enjoy the Riverfront trail and the surrounding recreational areas.
