It’s never too late to spread the good news.
The Washington Nationals are ripe with talent; Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper to name a few.
But prospects are never relegated to the normal talent pool. The Independent Leagues are becoming more and popular and a legitimate source for up-and-comer’s, as well as a way for players who have been released or undrafted to get the focus back on them.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks RHP Tyler Herron of the Independent American Association had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals.
Herron, who was the 46th pick in the first-round of the 2005 MLB June Amateur Draft, has spent time between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations over the course of his seven year professional career. The last two seasons were spent in the Independent Frontier League and American Association.
As a starter Herron has produced some decent numbers including an overall 3.99 ERA in over 630 innings. In 107 starts Herron has compiled a 37-36 record.
Until now, 2007 with the Swing of the Quad Cities (Single-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals), was his best professional season. Herron went 10-7 in 22 starts with a 3.74 ERA. He surrendered 26 walks and struck out 106 batters. His 1.085 WHIP is still the best of his career (courtesy of Baseball Reference).
Herron’s 2012 campaign now ranks as number one. In 17 starts, Herron was second in the league with 12 wins, which also led the team, as did his 105 strikeouts (courtesy of the American Association).
RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic was quoted on the RedHawks website, is hoping that Herron can take advantage of this opportunity;
“Tyler came here looking for a chance to revive his career and we are happy we could help him do that,” said RedHawks Manager Doug Simunic. “He became the ace of our staff as the season moved along and hopefully he can take advantage of this opportunity with the Nationals.”
