Heavy showers and thunderstorms over the past two days produced a widespread 3 to 5 inches of rainfall in Baltimore and Washington, with some locations receiving in excess of 5 inches. Flooding was common even in areas that do not typically experience such conditions. Fortunately, the system that produced the very cool and wet weather has moved away from the region, and May will begin with warmer temperatures and increasing sunshine. Low pressure that brought the rain to our area yesterday will move into eastern Canada. A cold front will sweep from west to east across central Maryland this afternoon and evening. The frontal passage will be accompanied by some cloudiness and a few isolated rain showers. A southerly flow ahead of the front will enable temperatures to reach the mid to upper 70s. During the overnight hours, high pressure will build over the region and cooler and drier air will overspread the area with most locations in the upper 40s to lower 50s by Friday morning. The period Friday through Sunday will feature plenty of sunshine and seasonable temperatures with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s and highs each day near 70.
