Weather Summary

Temperatures today are running 20 to 30 degrees colder than this time yesterday when highs reached the upper 60s to lower 70s in central Maryland and into Washington DC and central Virginia. Under a mostly cloudy sky, early afternoon readings are currently in the mid 40s. A weak upper-air disturbance will move to our south today and perhaps bring a few showers to southern Maryland. Otherwise, we can expect cloudy but dry conditions. Meanwhile, an arctic front will surge into the area from Canada tonight and Monday. This front will push to our southeast on Monday night, and an area of low pressure will form along the front. This low will intensify rapidly and pull away from the Mid-Atlantic coast. As the storm develops and intensifies, precipitation around the low will fall in the form of snow in Baltimore and Washington on Tuesday. At the moment, the storm looks to be forming far enough off the coast to keep the heaviest precipitation to our east. Consequently coastal areas of Maryland and Delaware may pick up more snow than areas west of the Chesapeake Bay. In Baltimore and Washington, wet snow is likely during the day on Tuesday with a small accumulation possible on grassy surfaces. Snow showers may linger into Tuesday evening with another coating of snow possible. It will be very windy and cold on Tuesday with highs only in the mid to upper 30s with gusty winds wrapping around the intensifying area of low pressure. As we move through the week, temperatures will begin to moderate into the 40s and 50s as March comes to an end.
