As Black History month closes, there is another project that people will be able to celebrate next year. The Washington DC Smithsonian Museum is in the midst of erecting a National Museum of African American History & Culture. This will be another great attraction that all nationalities and cultures will be able to enjoy.

On Thursday, February 27, 2014, The Today Show aired a segment about the building of the new museum that will not be far from the Washington Monument. The grand opening of the National Museum of African American History & Culture should be around 2016 now that the building almost halfway completed.

According to Maria Recio of the McClatchy Washington Bureau, The Smithsonian raised around $400 million dollars, with $12 million coming directly from Oprah Winfrey who will have a theater named in her honor. Artifacts from celebrities, historians, visionaries, entrepreneurs, business, research, and all walks of life, have donated priceless items to the vision of the new museum.

The building is located around a five-acre site on Constitution Avenue between 14th and 15th streets N.W. The new museum, the Smithsonian’s 19th, will be the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, art, history and culture.

Take a look at the Video to the left of this column, to get a view of the proposed design. It should be amazing.

The Mission of the new museum: “Ultimately, the National Museum of African American History and Culture should be a place of meaning, of memory, of reflection, of laughter, and of hope. It should be a beacon that reminds us of what we were; what challenges we still face; and point us towards what we can become.”
