Washington Capitals in NHL reality series for HBO

Breaking ground on two fronts, HBO Sports is taking its Emmy-winning "24/7" reality franchise both inside the Beltway and onto the ice -- all for a behind-the-scenes look at the rival Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.

For one month, cameras will follow the Caps, led by Alexander Ovechkin, and the Penguins, fronted by Sidney Crosby, both on and off the ice in preparation for their Dec. 23rd regular season game at DC's Verizon Center and a Jan. 1st "Winter Classic" matchup at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

“We will bring sport fans unprecedented access to what goes on behind the scenes in a sports league, and to two teams as they prepare for battle,” HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg, told a teleconference call on Thursday.

“These are two teams that don’t love each other. The rivalry aspect will play out well,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman added.

The four-episode "24/7" series, which has previously followed professional boxers en route to a championship bout and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson, will air its Caps/Penguins run from Dec. 15 through Jan. 5

Promo spots will be shot next week and preproduction is set to begin in mid-November in both D.C. and Pittsburgh. The network won't begin filming the daily lives of the Penguins and Capitals until December, to ensure fresh footage.
