On Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Washington Alliance for Humane Legislation urged Washington State residents to contact their legislators to take action on important spay and neuter and animal cruelty bills.
The Washington Alliance for Humane Legislation, also known as Save Washington Pets, urged animal advocates to support the companion animal spay/neuter assistance bill (SSB 5202) and a bill to prevent animal cruelty (SHB 1202).
As of Feb. 27, SSB 5202, which proposes to create companion animal safety, population control, and spay/neuter assistance, passed the first of two steps in the rules committee to decide if it will be placed on the floor calendar for a second reading.
According to Save Washington Pets, while SSB 5202 was voted out of committee, it was stripped out its pet-food fee funding source. This fee, which would have generated millions of dollars per year, was replaced with another funding source that allows animal control agencies to contribute up to $1 per pet licensed in their jurisdictions to the statewide spay/neuter fund.
Save Washington Pets asks their supporters to do the following:

The Prevention of Animal Cruelty Bill (SHB 1202) would strengthen Washington's animal fighting and animal cruelty laws, authorizing animal control officers and police to remove animals confined in vehicles when the animals' lives or health are threatened by extreme temperatures. The bill would create penalties that can be applied in those circumstances. This bill is currently in the House Rules Committee.
