Spring is in the air, and as thousands of Washingtonians and visitors enjoyed the cherry blossoms, festivals, and other related activities last weekend, soccer fans celebrated the season opener for the Washington Freedom on April 10.
This Sunday, the D.C.-area women’s professional soccer team will play its second game of the season against the Atlanta Beat—and to add some extra kick to the game, the Washington Freedom is teaming up with Compassion Over Killing to dedicate April 18 as “TryVeg Day.”
Concession stands at the Maryland SoccerPlex will expand their veg-friendly options, and Compassion Over Killing will be on hand to offer free materials about the many benefits of vegetarian eating as well as information about the ease of finding delicious meat-free cuisine in and around the nation’s capital.
“Healthy living and fitness are two areas we strongly promote, and which our team believes in,” says Dan Ferguson, Group Sales Manager for the Washington Freedom. “This event focuses on both, and we’re proud to team up with Compassion Over Killing to host ‘TryVeg Day.’”
In addition to encouraging healthier eating, TryVeg Day also shines a spotlight on kinder, more sustainable food choices. More than 10 billion birds, pigs, and cows are raised and killed for food each year in the U.S., and most of these animals spend their lives confined inside massive factory farms, never to set foot outside. In addition to causing tremendous animal suffering, animal agriculture stands out as one of the leading causes of both pollution and resource depletion.
With the 40th anniversary of Earth Day quickly approaching, the Washington Freedom’s TryVeg Day will encourage soccer fans to score a goal for the planet, animals, and our health—by choosing vegetarian foods.
