According to a Sept. 30 post from PunchDrunkGamer.com, XFC champ Stephanie Eggink opened a can of worms by claiming she could beat Invicta FC 115-pound title holder Carla Esparza, if the two were to magically go toe-to-toe inside the cage.
"I want to fight Carla Esparza," Eggink said when asked which fighter from any organization she would most want to fight. "She is the Invicta FC champion and I know I can beat her. I know it. All she does is take people down and lay on them and I can stop her from taking me down. I am so much stronger than her. So, I know I could stop her from taking me down. I would love to go 'beast mode' on her.
"I also want to fight Felice (Herrig) but not because I dislike her. Me and Felice had this tiff before I even called her out in XFC. I would love to fight her just because we have been jokingly bad-mouthing each other for so long. She would be someone I’d like to fight because she likes to stand and bang."
Esparza was quite upset by Eggink's "callout," and she took to Twitter to voice her concerns.
"It's cool, think the way @00snoflake did it was disrespectful, but hopefully someday soon we can settle it in the cage," Esparza tweeted.
"Honestly, think what you want about me, but since when is saying you are stronger and can beat someone 'disrespectful? Honestly people.." Eggink shot back.
Now that both parties have said their piece, fight fans can take a step back and decide who they think is right. Was Stephanie Eggink actually disrespectful, or is Esparza just overreacting?
On one hand, Eggink could have been more politically correct with her wording. If she had just left it at "I want to fight Carla Esparza," and maybe added that she would make that choice because "she wants to fight the best in the division," no one would have been offended or claimed that she was being disrespectful.
On the other hand, Eggink was certainly goaded on to call someone out during her interview with PunchDrunkGamer. They asked her to name someone from another promotion that she would like to fight, and then explain why she would want to.
It's not like she called out Esparza out of nowhere. It's pretty clear that Eggink wasn't going out of her way to insult Esparza.
However, Esparza was offended by the comments, even though Eggink wasn't intentionally trying to rip her.
