Was Nicki Minaj's Grammy performance art or a mockery of the Catholic Church?

During the February 12th airing of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, Nicki Minaj performed Roman Holiday and the Catholic League is outraged at her portrayal of the Catholic Faith. Was this art or a sheer mockery of the Catholic Church?

Nicki Minaj arrived on the Grammy red carpet in a red gown along the likings of a bishop/nun combination with an actor on arm dressed as what would appear to be the Pope. Minaj’s performance of Roman Holiday began with a confession, a video of demonic possession and a mock exorcism. It ensued with an onstage attempt of a reenactment of the Exorcism of Emily Rose amongst alter boys having sex and dancing monks to the back drop of what could only be the inside of a Catholic Church.

The Catholic League’s president, Bill Donohue issued a statement immediately following condemning Minaj’s Grammy theatrics as “vulgar” and blamed The Recording Academy for allowing the fiasco to ensue.

None of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by The Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam.[i]

Donohue continued with his outrage of the current mandate, which forces Catholics to fight for religious freedom and was seemingly disgusted with this latest presentation within the entertainment world. On February 10th, Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre issued a statement on the HHS Mandate and Obama’s “accommodation” for Long Island Catholics to view on the Diocesan website.

Those interested in the Catholic Faith and learning more about it may register for the Adult Bible Study at Holy Name of Mary in Valley Stream on March 14th and 15th.
