There is a great Arkansas connection associated with Dionne Warwick. Rob Shirakbari is her conductor. Warwick said he is the gypsy of the group, being from Monticello, Arkansas by way of Los Angeles, Portland and Los Angeles again. Shirakbari exhibited great passion as he played the keyboards while leading the band.
Warwick's stroll down memory lane began with "Walk On By," her number one R&B hit from 1964. She said she is used to singing her new, 21st century version of "I Say A Little Prayer," with her 'eldest' son David but since he wasn't here tonight, she guesses she will have to do it all by herself.
Brazil is the place Warwick calls her second home. "It's a glorious, glorious place," she said. "Instead of taking a vacation south of France, on the Italian riviera or Six Flags, think Brazil," she said. The music there, according to Warwick, compels you to move something. Warwick said if you don't move to this music you are simply dead. "Come with my to my Brazil," she said, as she started a song about the place she loves.
Warwick said in order to have a great show you need a place, people and a great group of young men who are her musicians. In addition to Shirakbari, the band is made up of Jeffrey Lewis, the drummer from Philly, Danny DeMorales, her bass player from Las Vegas and keyboard player Todd Hunter, from San Diego.
The crowd applauded for Warwick after she said she is in her 50th year of performing. She introduced two bonus songs of the concert, ones she requested from Burt Bacharach and Hal David. "Love Is Still The Answer," featuring the melodies of Burt Bacharach and "99 Miles From LA," featuring lyrics from Hal David.
The show's final song was "That's What Friends Are For." Warwick said friends are for loving, caring, giving and sharing.
