Warmer weather finally on its way

After a long, laboring winter, and a stuttering, staggering spring, warmer temperatures are finally on the way for Long Island into next week. Temperatures in some parts may break 80 degrees for the first time since last fall.

A warm front is struggling to push northward through the area as the workweek comes to an end. Clouds stick around and the chance of showers continues into the rest of Friday. Highs will be in the mid 60s. Temperatures may not fall too much Friday night, but dense fog is a possibility, along with showers and drizzle.

The warm front finally clears by Saturday morning and temperatures rise at a good clip. Highs on Saturday across Long Island reach the mid 70s, with cooler readings for the Forks and ocean-facing shores. There is the chance for scattered thunderstorms, but such probability is relatively low. Some showers may pass through in the morning and another round approaches late in the day. The weekend will not start with a washout.

On Sunday, the warm front is well north of the region, and the rain stays away. Mother's Day is a warm, sunny day with highs in the mid to upper 70s across Long Island. A local seabreeze keeps shore points cooler, but Sunday may feature more widespread warmth with dominating winds off land.

Next week, high pressure brings a southwest flow to the tri-state area. Highs Monday and Tuesday will be in the 80s for some, with cooler shorelines once again. A chance of thunderstorms is possible late Monday into Tuesday. Cooler readings are in the forecast by the middle of the week, but rain chances remain.
