Gardeners in Denver have had their spirits awaken in the past few days. That little streak of warm days served to get us thinking about tilling, plowing and planting. We all pulled out paper and pencil to plan this years garden layout. New internet gardening articles surfaced like spring buds. What can we do to get ready for the coming season? How do we keep that enthusiasm going once the snow hits Denver again?
Get inspired by gardening books.
No matter how much you know about gardening in Colorado, there's always more to learn. No gardener is an encyclopedia. Some do come pretty close. Even if you think you know everything you need to know, crack open a gardening book on occasion. You may not find any new information. Nevertheless, inspiration and new viewpoints await you.
Start a few seedlings.
You might think it's too early. Conventional wisdom tells you it is. Since when are gardeners into conventional thinking? What harm could it possibly do? Late January seed starting gives you a chance to grow fresh herbs, perennials and more for this years garden. Brighten the house up with some floral pots. Starting a little early gives seedlings a chance to toughen up before transplanting as well.
Nurture your indoor plants.
Now's a good time to turn your attention to your houseplants. Once you get started outdoors, they may fall by the wayside. Give them a little love while you still can. It's the perfect opportunity to re-pot them. Give them some fresh soil. Trim them back. If they're getting too big, divide them. Share your bounty with friends. Make sure your houseplants are well tended before you have to concentrate your efforts on the outdoors.
Use scattered warm days to build.
Are you planning to build raised beds or other garden structures? Warmer winter days are a great time to do it. We're lucky not to be buried in snow all winter like some areas of the country. By using warm winter days for garden construction and other maintenance tasks, we free up our spring and summer for straight out gardening.
