How should you decorate your home? We talked to Keri Petersen, an interior designer and owner of KP Spaces in Seattle, Wash., and Susan Lobalzo, an interior designer and owner of Lobalzo Interior Design Associates in Akron, Ohio, to get the lowdown on how to decorate for spring. To get started, check out the following tips.

Declutter your home
Before you break out the brightly colored paintings, you’ll need to cut down on your clutter. “You need to get control of your clutter, as it’s distracting and will take away from the new look you’ve created. Edit your rooms first before you start to decorate,” Petersen explains. To keep everything organized, use containers from The Container Store to stash your excess books or knickknacks for future use and save by shopping through Coupon Mountain's Container Store discount codes.

Remove heavy drapes
During the winter, heavy drapes can add warmth to a room, but should be placed in storage in spring. Petersen recommends swapping out heavy drapes and replacing them with lighter sheers. “Go with a light, bright color to brighten your rooms,” she says.

Cut a rug
Heavy wool rugs will make your floor warmer during the winter, especially if placed on a hardwood floor. To usher in spring, use a jute rug. “I think jute rugs look so much lighter and add a touch of nature, too,” Petersen says.

Freshen up the bathroom
Your bathroom deserves a fresh new look for spring as well. “Swap out your shower curtain for something light that adds some color, and get new, white towels for spring,” Petersen advises. For other touches of color, use accessories and candles in bright colors. Petersen cautions against using too much color in the bathroom. “Use just two or three items with a bright spring color for accents, as you really don’t want to overdo it,” she says.

Put color on your walls
Repainting the entire house just for spring isn’t practical for most people. However, you can still give your walls a facelift just in time for spring. “If you have a wall in a neutral color, brighten it up with punchy colors like teal or a citrusy color, like tangerine,” Petersen recommends. Artwork in bold colors can instantly brighten your room; when spring is over, simply place them in storage for next year.

Create a natural look with flowers and plants
If you have even the slightest of a green thumb, you might want to consider incorporating vases of flowers or houseplants in your home’s decor this spring. Whether you use a bouquet of flowers around the home, a potted orchid or just a sprig with flowers in a vase, Petersen says the natural elements will add impact to your home.

Use your nose
Put your cinnamon-scented candles away in storage and get candles in light, clean scents. Petersen recommends using candles that invoke spring, like cut grass, cotton or citrus. Check out Coupon Mountain’s coupon codes for Yankee Candle to save money on new candles, with deals like $5 flat shipping on all orders.

Don't forget the outdoors
For your balcony or backyard's turn at a spring makeover, Petersen recommends freshening up or replacing cushions for outdoor furniture, using outdoor candles and potted plants for a spot of color and using a new umbrella over your patio table. She also suggests using a fire pit to add warmth during those chilly spring nights.

Add a sweet splash of color
Got a sweet tooth? You can incorporate your love for candy in your decorating design for spring. “Get candy dishes in different shapes and sizes, then fill them with candy in light pastel colors,” Lobalzo recommends. Look for lemon drops, jelly beans and salt water taffy to fill your jars, then place the jars on coffee tables or your kitchen counter for a pop of color. Save on colorful jelly beans by shopping through Coupon Mountain's Jelly Belly page, and take advantage of coupon codes such as 10 percent off $75 or $5 off $25.

Bring in spring with accent colors
You have bright paintings on the wall and light curtains around your windows. How else can you incorporate spring? According to Lobalzo, you can use decorative pillows and accessories in fresh colors, like a daffodil yellow. Make a creative centerpiece
If your kitchen or dining room table needs some color, use natural elements to herald spring. Lobalzo recommends using a pretty basket, bowl or large vase and filling it up with lemons and limes for a natural and colorful design.

Mix and match color schemes
You don’t need to incorporate only one spring color throughout your home. “Look for different light colors to use, then mix it up a bit. Use one color in your dining room, then get a different color for your bathroom,” Lobalzo says.
