Warhawks 'Stagg-er' Mount Union for Division III title (again)

It's like deja vu all over again.

It's like deja vu all over again.

If it's the Amos Alona Stagg Bowl for the NCAA Division III Championship, you can count on seeing a lot of purple.

That's because for eight times in the last nine years, this game has pitted UW-Whitewater against Mount Union.

And in recent years, the tables have turned in favor of Whitewater in these title matchups.

On Friday night, the Raiders were seeing equal amounts of red as the Warhawks went on a second half tear to coast to the title, 52-14.

Mount Union got a score late in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-14, but couldn't rustle up a single point thereafter.

Head coach Lance Leipold's bunch took advantage of five turnovers on their way to their 20th consecutive post-season win.

The last time they lost a game in the second season was the 2008 Stagg Bowl against, you guessed it, Mount Union.

UW-W has taken the crown in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 under Leipold's tutelage.

"I couldn't be more proud of what this group has done this year," Leipold said after handing Mount Union their worst loss in four decades.

"The way we battled and finished this thing off here today."

The Warhawks got two touchdowns apiece from Milwaukee product Jordan Ratliffe on the ground and Jake Kumerow and Tyler Huber in the air.

Ratliffe ended up rushing 28 times racking up 146 yards.

The cherry on the sundae was Brady Grayvold's 37-yard 'Pick 6' with 8:23 to play, but the issue seemed it to be decided when the teams came out of the locker room for the second half.

The benchmark has been etched in stone as regards the football program at Whitewater.

Either you win it all or you have not had a successful season.

It is what drives quarterback Matt Behrendt and the others to attain the unattainable.
