Mythic Entertainment's Warhammer Online, based on the Warhammer tabletop games created by Games Workshop, will shut down on December 18th, 2013. The announcement came today, on the game's fifth anniversary.
In a statement posted to the game's official website, the Warhammer Online team said the shutdown was due to Mythic's licensing deal with Games Workshop coming to an end. Because of the impending shutdown, players will no longer have the ability to auto-renew their accounts with 3 month subscriptions, and Mythic is no longer selling 3 month game time codes.
Back in June, Mythic announced that 6 month game time codes and 6 month automatic subscription renewals were being discontinued, citing "low interest." In hindsight, it seems the Warhammer Online development team probably knew at the time that the game was likely to shut down by the end of the year, since this announcement came six months before the shutdown date.
In a separate "Notice of Shutdown" message, Warhammer Online Producer Carrie Gouskos reflects on her time with the game, going all the way back to 2006, when it was announced at E3. You can read her full statement by clicking here.
