With the game's shut down approaching quickly, many "Warhammer Online" fans were curious about how the game will end. Today, developers announced that the game will be free for players with existing "Warhammer Online" accounts until the game closes this December.
No one can subscribe to the game any longer and new "Warhammer Online" accounts cannot be created. Players that once subscribed or were currently subscribing can play for free until the end. In fact, new NPCs are slated to hit the servers to help people level up quickly to experience the good-bye planned for the game.
The five-year-old, subscription based, and RvR-focused game will cease since the developers' licensing deal is not being renewed by Games Workshop. It saw over 750,000 registered players at its Sept. 18, 2008 launch and dropped to 300,000 by May 2009. Several server merges took place since then, and now, the game only has three servers open. They will shut down on Dec. 18.
