A Greenwood County teen is in jail charged with child abuse, The Index Journal reported January 27.

David Zackary Ledford, 16, of Ware Shoals was charged with child abuse or neglect with great bodily injury after Greenwood County Sheriff's Officer deputies were called to his home on Folly Bend Drive on December 16.

The arrest took place last Friday at Ledford's 11 Hampton Avenue home in Ware Shoals. He was charged as an adult and taken to Greenwood County Detention Center, where he was later released on on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond.

Ledford claimed he had fed his daughter, and while he was fixing himself a meal he heard his three month old daughter choking. He returned to find the baby had stopped breathing, and called 911 and the baby's mother.

The baby was stabilized and taken by ambulance to Self Regional Healthcare, where a CT scan found the baby had suffered subdural hemotoma to her skull, as well as retinal hemorrhages in both her eyes. Doctors at Self Regional determined the baby had suffered brain damage consistent with being shaken, and contacted Greenwood authorities.

The baby was air lifted to Greenville for more tests, provided more evidence that the child had been shaken.

Ledford defended himself when he met with deputies and SLED agents three days later, saying he panicked after his daughter went limp. Ledford said he shook her in an effort to get a response.

It's been determined the three-month-old was healthy with no medical problems until this incident.
