Ward Melville Heritage Organization hosts 23rd Annual Scarecrow Competition

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is looking to get more families, Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, church groups, and other groups to register and create a Scarecrow to put up in Stony Brook Village for Halloween. There is a $10 entry fee and winners will receive cash prizes. The deadline to register is Friday, September 27th.

There are three different categories of entries and prizes:

Category A: Professional: Artists, commercial establishments, and all previous 1st place winners. Award $300.

Category B: Adult/Family: Individual adults or families led by an adult. 1st place $250, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50.

Category C: Children: Individuals or groups of children under 12. 1st place $250, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $50.

Contestants will set up their displays from Sept. 27 through 29 at assigned locations. The competition runs from September 30 through October 31, 2013. The public will cast their votes by casting ballots available at Stony Brook Village Center stores. Also, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all Scarecrows decorated in a majority of Pink will receive 50 bonus points. Winners will be notified by 5:00 pm on October 29.

On Thursday, October 31 prizes will be awarded at the Halloween Festival at 3:00 p.m. in the inner court, followed by photographs of the winners with their sponsors and scarecrows. After this there will be a dance exhibition by Spotlight Dance Academy at 4:00 p.m., followed by the Children’s Costume Parade.

Directions: LIE Exit 62 (County Rd. 97) north to the end. Turn left at “Historic Stony Brook” sign. Continue 1.5 miles to Main St. Turn right 1/4 mile to Stony Brook Village Center.
