1) Bells on Danforth: May 11, 2013
This year's Bells on Danforth ride is set for noon on Saturday, May 11. That's the day before Mother’s Day, making it a perfect event for the whole family to celebrate Mom with a fun bike ride to Queen's Park. You've got six weeks to dust off your bikes and get ready for the big celebration of cycling in our neighbourhood. We'll be gathering at East Lynn Park (on Danforth Ave. one block west of Woodbine Ave.) at noon for the ride. New this year, a contingent of riders led by TO35Cycles will be starting their ride from the intersection of Danforth Ave. and Danforth Rd. before joining us at East Lynn Park. Watch the TO35Cycles website for more information about that part of the ride. You can also check out some pictures of last year's ride on the Bells on Danforth website. Don't miss the fun this year!
2) Bells on Danforth volunteer meeting
The volunteers who make Bells on Danforth possible have already started to organize the ride and are looking for more volunteers. The next volunteer meeting is on Thursday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Committee Room A of the East York Civic Centre (northwest corner of Coxwell and Mortimer Aves). Join us at the meeting if you'd like to help out in any way. If you're not able to come to the meeting but would still like to be involved, contact the committee at info@bellsondanforth.ca.
3) Lower Don Trail public meeting
The City of Toronto is hosting a public meeting about upcoming improvements to the Lower Don Trail on Tuesday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m. in St. Paul's Church (227 Bloor St. East). Even though the Lower Don Trail, which connects Taylor Creek and E.T. Seton Parks to the Waterfront Trail, is one of the most important commuting and recreational trails in the east end, trail conditions have deteriorated significantly in recent years. The city wants your input on the new master plan, which will include trail improvements, art displays, increased access, and connections to other trails and neighbourhoods.
4) Upcoming Ward 29 Bikes meetings
Are you interested in improving cycling conditions in our neighbourhood? Helping to organize social activities? Working behind the scenes? Or just knowing what we're up to and trading cycling stories? Ward 29 Bikes volunteers meet every two weeks on Thursday evenings to chat, plot, and organize upcoming activities. If you think you'd like to be involved, join us at one of our upcoming meetings. Our next two meetings are on Thursday April 11 and 25. We always meet in Timothy's World Coffee in Carrot Common starting around 6:00 p.m. Our meetings are social and informal, so don't be afraid to drop by and say hi.
5) Winter riding tip #5: It's spring!
It's spring! The last of the ice is gone from the Valley paths, tulips are starting to poke out of the garden, and the sun is coming out from its winter doldrums. That can mean only one thing: it's time to shake the dust off your bike, get it out of the garage, and get riding!
