Fifth Column Games, an independent development studio with several successful projects like "Pawn Stars: The Game" and "NBA2K MyLIFE," launched a new Kickstarter for their upcoming deck builder/CCG-hybrid "War of Omens" which as of today Dec. 16, 2013 is at $13,177. That's almost half its $30,000 goal in just one week, with another 27 days left to go.

"War of Omens" is a free-to-play game which mixes parts of other deck-building games such as "Dominion," "Quarriors," and "Thunderstone" with that of popular CCGs like "Magic: the Gathering," "Pokémon," and "Yu-Gi-Oh!. The result, according to Fifth Column Games is "a fun, fast, and challenging digital card game with three distinct, playable factions." All of the cards from each faction has their artwork created by the same artist.

In this 3D "Collectible Deck-Builder" which can be played from a web browser, players create their own decks and there no public cards. You'll buy cards spending gold and use resources such as food to attack your opponents. One interesting feature of the games is that "cards upgrade over time." In booster packs players choose between one of three cards, either "a new card to add to their collection, broadening their options and increasing their strategic flexibility" or to "upgrade an existing card instead, making it more powerful."

When cards are upgraded, a new copy of the card is created with its gold cost reduced by 1. Now you have two copies of this card to use, and one of them is cheaper, which creates entirely new gambits, combos, and deck possibilities. Cards can be upgraded multiple times, and each time, the new copy is even cheaper and thus even more powerful. In this way we remove the cumbersome element of unwanted common cards that plague so many card games, give players choice when they really want it, and allow players to see the rewards of their play over time, even when getting cards they already own.

Players can play against an AI with "scaling difficulty levels," however it's the multiplayer battles that'll no doubt be the main draw. Winning online battles will earn you money to "expand and upgrade" your card collection and make a killer deck.

"War of Omens" certainly looks interesting, and we'll be sure to keep an eye on it as the game gets closer to launch.
