A few days after they debuted footage on Sunday, July 27 at the 2014 San Diego Comic Con, Warner Brothers have released the first footage from “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” This third film will not only be Peter Jackson’s last film in his “Hobbit” trilogy but also, pending any last minute announcements, the last time the Oscar-winning filmmaker makes a film set in Middle Earth. And by the looks of this teaser, Jackson certainly is in no mood to go out with a whimper. It’s epic & gargantuan in many ways. Although Jackson’s “Hobbit” films haven’t received the critical plaudits or scaled the box office heights of his landmark “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, they’ve certainly had their share of fans. While I wasn’t a fan of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” I was back on board with “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”
The Battle of the Five Armies, whose title was changed from There & Back Again will follow Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and pals as they take on Smaug, Sauron and the orcs at the Lonely Mountain. The official synopsis, as released by Warner Brothers, is noted below:
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.
As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ opens worldwide on December 17th. Watch the trailer above.
