WANTED: The "right" employee

When looking to hire employees, it's important that you attract the right people. The right people are those who are capable of helping the company reach its mission and future goals.

If you're in the startup phase of your business you may not think this topic is important. But many businesses fall into this classic scenario. One person develops a great idea and brings in a friend that he has worked with in the past. They then bring on a friend of a friend who is an expert in a certain area of the business. Several months down the road, things aren't moving as planned, everyone has a different point of view about the direction of the company. The original passion that fueled the business is missing and the dream eventually dies.

So, how do you attract the "right" people? There are three things that you must consider when recruiting: job descripitons, interview process, and team composition.

Job descriptions are a list of descriptors that give an overview of the position. These descriptors highlight the details of the job in addition to the required skillset of the applicant. The interview is a very important part of the recruitment process. When interviewing it's important that the interviewer employs behavioral interviewing. Behavioral interviewing requires that the interviewer ask probing questions about competencies based on a candidate’s past and present performance in order to predict future ones. In today’s market, most candidates have become expert interviewers and will tell you exactly what you want to hear.

Lastly, you want to think about team composition. Don’t set your people up to fail by putting them in roles that don’t fit their personalities. Assess the total employee and determine which role would best fit each person.
