Wanted suspect shot while trying to flee in Cherokee County

A man wanted for numerous charges in Cherokee County was shot today while trying to flee in a patrol car, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reports.

The suspect, whose name is not being released at this time, was walking close to the Colony Center subdivision off Highway 92 at around 3:15 p.m. Police discovered him after someone placed a call to 911, informing authorities that a man with several outstanding warrants was walking around in the area.

According to Lt. Jay Baker., spokesperson for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, police found the man at Baxter's Groceries, off of Highway 92, walking in the parking lot. Baker stated that the suspect ran away when he saw authorities.

"The suspect fled on foot, and the deputy chased him on foot around the building and the suspect jumped into the deputy's patrol car," Baker said.

The deputy on duty fired at him, but the suspect was able to start the patrol car and drive down Highway 92. Police chased the suspect for approximately 4 miles before the he stopped at the intersection of 92 and Neese Road. The windshield were shattered with bullet shots and tires were shot before the suspect stopped.

The suspect sustained injuries from gunshot wounds during the high-speed chase, and was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. The amount of gunshot wounds is undisclosed.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the shooting.
