There are some things that won’t cost you anything to provide that can help to energize and help show your staff that they are appreciated. There are things that are more important to people than money that can help foster dedication, provide motivation, and maybe even reduce turnover.
Summer is here and there is no better time to institute some of these no cost perks:
Casual Friday - There is nothing people like better than being able to have something to look forward to at the end of the week. Casual Friday or dress-down day is becoming a growing trend in the workplace. Some companies have even extended the casual Friday theme for the whole summer or even have gone to a more casual dress every day of the week. The opportunity to wear jeans, khakis, and sneaks instead of a suit and tie fosters a feeling that money can’t buy.
Summer Hours – Implementing a summer hour program can provide more bang for your buck than many traditional benefits. This is a benefit that can easily be implemented, doesn’t cost you anything, and can easily motivate your staff beyond measure. Think about it. You have already budgeted the salary for the year. If you can empower employees, give them a small amount of time to help with the work life balance, help staff save some gas by not sitting in traffic at rush hour (1/2 early dismissal means a lot in some areas), and have them get home a little more refreshed to start enjoying their weekend, this is something you can’t put a price on.
Early closing before holidays provides a lot of the same benefits listed above under summer hours and is really appreciated. Let’s face it. Everyone is thinking about their plans already anyway.
Discount Programs – There are many places that are willing to offer your employees a discount. Some programs are widely known like theme parks, movie tickets, etc. Are you aware that you can also negotiate discount programs with vendors that your staff frequent (restaurants, malls, etc.)? Just ask.
Some popular discount programs available in the Philly area are to Sesame Place, Hershey Park, Great Adventure, etc. Do a Google search to locate programs in your area and decide what you want to implement this year and get started now.
