Want to help resolve the Playstation Network outage? Sony is hiring

In a previous column I noted that one of the challenges that Sony may be having dealing with the Playstation Network outage is having the right personnel on hand to deal with the issue. In particular, if those who set up the initial network security have left, current employees may not be as familiar with the systems.

Whether this is true or not, we do not know. But we do know that Sony is looking for qualified people to work in that area. Playstation.com is most likely supported out of their San Diego office (based on the technical contact records for the Playstation.com domain registration). Here are some of the jobs Sony currently has available in San Diego:

  • Senior PHP Developer (temp)
  • Senior Network Systems Engineer
  • Senior PS3 Programmer
  • Senior Technical Project Manager
  • Senior Database Engineer
  • Senior Network Programmer
  • Systems Administrator
  • Staff online game systems engineer
  • Senior Unix Systems Administrator
  • Senior Java Engineer

That’s quite a few senior people. Are they hiring to support growth? Or to replace people who left? Either way, these represent just a few of the 126 jobs Sony has available in California at the moment according to their careers website.

So, if you live in, or want to live in San Diego (which is a beautiful city), and are very good, consider giving them a call. Even if you don't get there in time to resolve this "indefinite" outage, you might be able to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.

And no, I don't have any connection with Sony. I just want to be able to watch Netflix films on my PS3 again.

(Update - there is a workaround to view Netflix on your PS3 even while the Playstation Network is down)
